Implantable Loop Recorder
An Implantable Loop Recorder (ILR) is a small device that continuously monitors the heart’s electrical activity over months or years. It is used to diagnose unexplained symptoms such as fainting, palpitations, or suspected arrhythmias not captured on short-term ECGs.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The ILR is inserted through a tiny incision under local anaesthesia, usually on the upper chest. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes.
Once implanted, the device automatically records any irregular rhythms and can also be manually activated by the patient if symptoms occur.
Data are transmitted wirelessly to your cardiologist for review, allowing early detection of abnormal rhythms.
Recovery and Follow-Up
No hospital stay is required, and most patients return to normal activities immediately. The small incision heals within a few days.
Routine follow-ups are scheduled to review recorded data and correlate findings with symptoms. The device can remain in place for up to three years and is removed once a diagnosis or treatment plan is established.
