Defibrillator Implantation

Defibrillator Implantation

An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a device designed to detect and treat dangerous heart rhythms that could lead to cardiac arrest. It continuously monitors the heart and delivers electrical impulses or controlled shocks to restore normal rhythm when necessary.

At CardioOne, our specialists perform ICD implantation with precision and careful monitoring to provide effective rhythm management and long-term cardiac safety.

Why a Defibrillator May Be Needed

ICDs are recommended for patients with:

  • A history of ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation
  • Previous cardiac arrest
  • Weakened heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) at risk of dangerous arrhythmias
  • Certain inherited rhythm disorders

By detecting and treating abnormal rhythms within seconds, the device significantly reduces the risk of sudden cardiac death.

How the Procedure Is Performed

The implantation procedure is similar to that for a pacemaker. Under sedation or light general anaesthesia, an incision is made beneath the collarbone. One or more leads are threaded through a vein into the heart, where they monitor rhythm and deliver therapy when required.

The leads connect to a small generator implanted under the skin. The system is tested to ensure appropriate sensing and response before closure. The procedure usually lasts one to two hours.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Most patients stay overnight for observation. Temporary activity restrictions are recommended to allow the leads to stabilise. Regular follow-up visits are scheduled to review device data, confirm settings, and monitor battery life.

ICDs can store rhythm events for review, allowing your cardiologist to assess how your heart is functioning and whether any therapy was delivered.

Ongoing Management

Periodic device checks are required every few months. Many modern ICDs allow remote monitoring, sending secure data directly to the clinic for review. Battery replacement is usually needed every 6-10 years.
