Pacemaker Implantation
A pacemaker is a small device implanted under the skin to regulate the heart’s rhythm when it beats too slowly or irregularly. It ensures that the heart maintains an adequate rate to meet the body’s needs.
At CardioOne, our cardiologists perform pacemaker implantation using safe, modern, and minimally invasive techniques tailored to each patient’s condition.
When a Pacemaker Is Needed
Pacemakers are used to treat various rhythm disturbances such as:
- Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
- Heart block (interrupted electrical signals between chambers)
- Sick sinus syndrome (malfunction of the heart’s natural pacemaker)
Symptoms of these conditions may include fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, or fainting. Implantation restores consistent electrical activity to prevent these issues.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia with light sedation. A small incision is made beneath the collarbone, and one or more thin wires (leads) are threaded through a vein into the heart under X-ray guidance.
These leads are positioned in the heart chambers, tested for optimal placement, and then connected to the pacemaker generator, a small, battery-powered unit placed under the skin.
Once connected, the system is tested to ensure accurate sensing and pacing before the incision is closed. The procedure usually takes about one hour.

Recovery and Aftercare
Patients are generally monitored overnight. The incision site may be slightly tender for a few days. Normal activities can be resumed within a week, though heavy lifting or strenuous arm movement should be avoided until cleared by the cardiologist.
Follow-Up and Device Checks
Pacemakers require regular checks to ensure proper function and battery health. These are done non-invasively using a programmer that communicates wirelessly with the device.
Battery life typically ranges from 7-12 years, after which replacement of the generator (not the leads) is required.
