Professor Darren Walters is a leading interventional and structural cardiologist renowned for his work in transcatheter heart valve therapies and complex coronary interventions in Australia. With expertise in procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), percutaneous mitral valve repair and replacement, left atrial appendage occlusion, and implantable cardiac devices, he continues to shape the future of minimally invasive cardiovascular care.
A graduate of the University of Queensland, Prof Walters completed his specialist cardiology training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital. He went on to undertake a prestigious clinical and research fellowship in interventional cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Prof Walters currently serves as Director of Cardiology at The Prince Charles Hospital and as a Visiting Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside (Holy Spirit Northside). He has previously held senior leadership roles including Executive Director of The Prince Charles Hospital, Royal Brisbane Hospital, and the Heart and Lung Services for Metro North Health, overseeing services across five major hospitals.
He holds the position of Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and international guidelines. His research interests lie in clinical and translational cardiovascular innovation, and he has played a central role in numerous international clinical trials.
Prof Walters is actively involved in national and international professional communities. He is the former Chair of the Interventional Working Group of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ), former Deputy Chair of the Advanced Training Committee in Cardiology, former Chair of the TAVI ACOR Registry, and a former member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Task Force on Acute Coronary Syndromes. He also represented CSANZ on the Australian Resuscitation Council for a decade.
